The Toonik Tyme Festival in Iqaluit is an annual celebration of Inuit traditions and return to spring. When Bryan Pearson founded the Toonik Tyme in 1965, the festival consisted of traditional Inuit games,
throat singing and dancing, a community feast and an evening of dancing and music at Toonik Lake.
Every year, the Honourary Toonik award is given to an individual in the community on a nomination basis. This award is a special honour as the chosen individual is someone that is considered to be an
outstanding volunteer and demonstrates exceptional community spirit.
Each year the Toonik Tyme Society, local organizations and businesses, and over 100 volunteers work together for this cultural festival that celebrates the arrival of spring with a number of traditional
activities. The festival includes snowmobile races, Inuit games, traditional Inuit activities, igloo building, dog team races, scavenger hunts and a craft fair, Inuit games, and a seal skinning contest.
The Toonik Tyme Festival has something to offer all ages and visitors.
