Sudbury Theatre Centre

170 Shaughnessy St, Greater Sudbury, ON P3E 3E7, Canada

The Sudbury Theatre Centre (STC) is a prominent professional theatre located at 170 Shaughnessy Street in Sudbury, Ontario. Established on September 14, 1971, its inception was inspired by a 1967 Ontario government report recommending the creation of a theatre company in Sudbury. Local arts patrons Sonja Dunn, Carolyn Fouriezos, Bill Hart, Bob Remnant, and Peg Roberts were instrumental in its founding. The STC initially staged productions and children's theatre workshops at venues like Laurentian University's Fraser Auditorium, Cambrian College, and the Inco Club. In 1982, the STC inaugurated its own 289-seat theatre facility on Shaughnessy Street, marking a significant milestone in its history.

Over the years, the STC has been dedicated to producing a diverse array of theatrical performances, including plays, musicals, and youth drama programs aimed at educating students in the performing arts. In 2023, a significant development occurred when YES Theatre, another esteemed local theatre company, merged with the STC. This amalgamation led to YES Theatre managing the STC's venue while maintaining the Sudbury Theatre Centre name for the building. The merger has strengthened the local arts community, allowing for a broader range of productions and educational programs.

The STC remains a vital cultural institution in Northern Ontario, serving as a hub for the creation and presentation of diverse theatrical works. It also functions as a significant community gathering space in Greater Sudbury, fostering artistic expression and community engagement
