Moraine Lake

Banff National Park, Alberta

Moraine Lake is one of the most iconic and picturesque destinations in Banff National Park, Alberta. Situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, about 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) from Lake Louise, Moraine Lake is renowned for its stunning turquoise-blue waters, which are a result of light refracting off the rock flour (fine particles of rock) deposited in the lake by surrounding glaciers.

The lake is fed by glacial runoff, and its color is most vibrant in late June, reflecting the peak meltwater inflow. Surrounded by towering mountains, waterfalls, and rock piles, Moraine Lake sits at an elevation of approximately 1,884 meters (6,181 feet), and the stunning Ten Peaks form a dramatic backdrop, each rising to more than 3,000 meters (9,800 feet).

One of the best ways to experience Moraine Lake is by hiking the various trails that start from the lake's vicinity. The Rockpile Trail is a short, easy hike that leads to the top of a large rock pile, offering the iconic view of the lake and the surrounding peaks. This view is often referred to as the "Twenty Dollar View," as it was once featured on the reverse side of the Canadian twenty-dollar bill issued in 1969 and 1979.

For those seeking a more challenging adventure, the Larch Valley and Sentinel Pass trails provide access to alpine meadows filled with larch trees, which turn a brilliant golden color in the fall, and offer panoramic views of the surrounding area. Canoeing on Moraine Lake is another popular activity, allowing visitors to appreciate the serene beauty of the lake from the water.

The Moraine Lake Lodge, located on the lake's shore, provides accommodation for those who wish to stay overnight and experience the tranquility of the area at dawn and dusk. It's important to note that the road to Moraine Lake is usually open from late May to mid-October, depending on weather conditions, and it can get very busy during peak tourist season. Early morning or late evening visits are recommended to avoid the crowds and to find parking more easily.

Moraine Lake's breathtaking scenery, combined with its accessibility and the range of activities available, makes it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Banff National Park.
