Loyalist House

120 Union St, Saint John, NB E2L 1A3, Canada

Loyalist House is a historic museum located in uptown Saint John, New Brunswick. Built between 1810 and 1817 by David Daniel Merritt, a United Empire Loyalist from New York, the house remained in the Merritt family for nearly 150 years before being acquired by the New Brunswick Historical Society in 1959. It stands today as a tribute to the early Loyalist settlers and the craftsmanship of the period.

Loyalist House is one of the oldest wooden buildings in Saint John that has not been structurally altered since its construction. It survived the Great Fire of 1877, thanks to quick actions by servants who protected it with wet towels. The house showcases Georgian architecture, featuring symmetrical design, original woodwork, and period furnishings. Visitors can explore rooms filled with artifacts that reflect the lifestyle of an upper-class Saint John family from the early 19th century.
