Cabot Tower – A Historic Tower on Signal Hill in St. John’s.
Cabot Tower is a famous historic building located on Signal Hill in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. It is one of the best-known landmarks in the province and offers amazing views of the city and the Atlantic Ocean.
The tower was built between 1897 and 1900 to celebrate two big events: the 400th anniversary of John Cabot’s voyage to North America in 1497 and Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. The tower is made of red sandstone and has a strong, castle-like design.
Cabot Tower is most famous for a big moment in communication history. In 1901, Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal here. That signal came from Poldhu, Cornwall in England and marked the beginning of wireless communication across the ocean.
Inside the tower, you can find historical exhibits about Marconi’s work, Signal Hill’s military past, and the role the site played in protecting the harbour. There are also displays about Newfoundland's history and the development of communication technology.
Visitors can climb to the top of the tower for a great view of the city, coastline, and ships in the harbour. The area around Cabot Tower has walking trails, lookout points, and interpretive signs that help you learn more about the area’s history.
In the summer, Signal Hill also features historical reenactments and guided tours, including costumed soldiers performing military drills. It’s a great place for families, history lovers, and anyone who enjoys scenic views.
Cabot Tower is part of the Signal Hill National Historic Site and is managed by Parks Canada. It is open to visitors seasonally, usually from spring to fall.
