Whistler Blackcomb is a major year-round ski resort located 125 km north of Vancouver, in British Columbia, Canada. It is one of the most-visited ski resort, nearly 2 million visitors a year. Vancouver/Whistler was selected as the winning bid for the 2010 Winter Olympics in July 2003. Whistler and Blackcomb were originally separate resorts, until they merged in 1997. Intrawest, the British Columbia real estate firm that developed Blackcomb, purchased Whistler and merged the two operations.
Whistler is a household name in the skiing and snowboarding fraternity. Whistler Blackcomb ski resort consists of the interconnected Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb Mountain, and it has an incredible 8,171 acres (3,307 hectares) of terrain, a huge vertical drop of 1,609 metres, over 200 marked trails, and plenty of off-piste opportunities.
Whistler Blackcomb is located about 125 kilometers (77 miles) north of Vancouver, and is accessible by car, shuttle, or train.
The resort is actually a combination of two mountains - Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb Mountain - which are connected by the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola. The gondola is one of the longest and highest in the world, and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Whistler Blackcomb is known for its excellent skiing and snowboarding, with over 200 marked runs and an average annual snowfall of 11.6 meters (38 feet). The resort also offers a variety of other winter activities, such as snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and ice skating.
Whistler Blackcomb has hosted many high-profile events over the years, including the 2010 Winter Olympics, the World Ski and Snowboard Festival, and the Crankworx mountain bike festival.
